Period Sketch of Knight’s Cross SS Leader

$575.00

This is an ivory framed pencil sketch of Knight’s Cross holder and commander of the 37th SS Cavalry Division “Maria-Theresa,” SS-Brigadeführer August Zehender.  Zehender commanded bravely during the battle for Budapest, and was KIA in February of 1945. The sketch depicts him looking straight on, and is framed in ivory, hand crafted (possibly locally obtained in Hungary?). An interesting piece of wartime artwork, all indications being it was  inscribed on the rear at time of presentation, and period re-marked below that with the date of his death. On the bottom Edge is carved  “Budapest IV II  1945.” The Roman numerals IV and II standing for day and month– 4th of February– in the German method. A great addition to the ‘RK personalities’ collection. COA accompanies.
