This formal cape is a beautiful example, in near mint condition (these were for special wear only, hence the very fine condition). It consists of a sleeveless, non-button-able cape, made of fine black worsted wool, with a fine velvet collar, topped off by aluminum edging at the collar, and the double roundel aluminum SS medallions in front, attached by a central chain. The silver-gray silk lining features an inside pocket on the right side, bearing the tailor’s label “HH Dohmessen & Co. Berlin Hermann Göring Str. 4” with the wearer’s name “‘Heern’ Ludwig … June 1938.” A silver bullion-embroidered eagle in the special shape for the cape, is applied on the left in the sleeve eagle configuration. The following is the assignment history of Ludwig, from his beginnings in the NSDAP through war’s end: (1902 – 1989) served from 1919 to 1923 with the Navy Brigade Ehrhard, joined the NSDAP in 1923, the SA in 1926 and the SS in 1929. Commander of the SS Sturmbann I/14 (Gotha) in 1933, member of the Thuringian state parliament from 1929 to 1933, Reichstag representative for Thuringia in 1933 and later for the constituency of Weser-Ems. (In the interim, he worked in the propaganda department under the infamous Walter Darre, the leading Nazi ideologist, who had an enormous influence on the NSDAP and its ideological ‘growth.’) Commander of the SS Abschnitt XXX (Kassel) in 1935 and of the SS Abschnitt XIV (Bremen-Horn) in 1937. Chief of police in Bremen in 1938. General staff of the Höherer SS- und Polizeiführer in Reichsgau Wartheland in 1942, commander of the SS Abschnitt V (Essen) in 1943, general staff of the SS Oberabschnitt Fulda-Werra in 1944. Appointed SS Brigadeführer on 20 April 1945. In US detention until 1948, before being cleared by a denazification tribunal and categorized as a “follower” after a pardon in 1952.
