This is a late pattern M38 FJ helmet, with 97% finish and furnished with slotted side, and vented-slotted rear, rivets. The liner is untouched as installed, but shows heavy damage to the leather and cut off strap remnants. There are signs of blood throughout the remaining materials. Forensically this is a textbook example of a battlefield cutoff helmet. The deterioration of the liner likely resulted from leaving blood and fluids on the leather–which may have been soaked in for up to many days before the helmet was taken as a souvenir.
