Following the “Anschluss” (annexation) of Austria in March 1938, SS-Oberführer Otto Wächter served as the prominent State Commissioner (Staatskommissar) to the Reich Governor (Reichsstatthalter) in Vienna. In this role, he was instrumental in the political screening, dismissal, and disenfranchisement of civil servants, officials, and academics (such as those at the University of Vienna) according to National Socialist criteria.

Duties and Context of the Office

  • Purging the Administration: The State Commissioner enforced the “Decree for the Reorganization of the Austrian Civil Service,” organized dismissals, and directed political alignment (Gleichschaltung).
  • Targeting Universities: His area of responsibility included the removal of dissenting or Jewish professors and lecturers.
  • Cooperation with Nazi Authorities: The office worked closely with the NSDAP Vienna Regional Leadership (Gauleitung) and Reich authorities to integrate Austrian structures into the German Reich.

Most documents are dated during the Anschluss period and show the  Political, Economic and social aspects of how Germany was quickly attempting to eradicate resistance, and at the same time bring all of Austria into the fold of the Third Reich. Many interesting documents, showing some holocaust related decision-making as well as potential evidence of theft of bank accounts and personal property.  An incredible and historically important collection of documentation, recently from an old collection.
